Despite trailing from the first leg, Estudiantes made light work of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores group stage with an emphatic 4-0 win over Independiente del Valle of Ecuador. Two goals from defender, Leandro Desábato, one from centre forward Guido Carrillo and a late Arturo Mina own goal confirmed safe passage into Group 7.
Very early it became obvious that Estudiantes’ equatorial visitors struggled with balls into the penalty area and it took Mauricio Pellegrino’s side no time in reversing the tie. Twelve minutes in, a long throw was flicked on and Desábato stretched out a leg to thump the ball into the net. Another headed opportunity for Carlos Auzqui had already been denied by the post before Guido Carrillo rose to head in from a corner.
Just after the break, Desábato’s flicked header caught the goalkeeper by surprise and sneaked inside the near post and that all but ended the contest. To compound the Ecuadorians misery, in injury time, Arturo Mino managed to head the ball into his own net and draw to an end an utterly miserable night in La Plata.
All six Argentine sides now take their places in the group stages with Estudiantes completing the set and entering group seven with Barcelona of Ecuador, Atlético Nacional of Colombia and Libertad of Paraguay.
