Racing’s title defence got off to a spluttering start last night in Avellaneda as a rare Sebastián Saja error gave Rosario Central a superb away victory and condemned La Academia to a first defeat in ten Primera matches. Franco Cervi finished superbly after the scuffed clearance from Saja, ending the goalkeepers monumental run without conceding, but Diego Cocca will be more preoccupied with his sides disjointed performance. A shadow of the side that lifted the Transición title just some months ago the defeat serves as an early wake-up call for the champions.
Earlier in Liniers, Vélez Sarsfield saw off a spirited but ultimately lacking in quality Aldosivi side. Two headed goals from Milton Caraglio earned Miguel Ángel Russo opening day victory over their newly promoted opponents but it was far from a convincing display. Aldosivi will be disappointed given that they played against ten men for almost the entire second half after Emiliano Amor was shown a second yellow card just after the break. Toiling to break down their hosts, Aldosivi eventually fizzled out and succumbed to Caraglio’s second.
