Huracán may have breezed through their Copa Libertadores qualification but perhaps their exertions have left some of their defenders a little fatigued after a calamitous clearance and mixup at the back gifted Unión an opening round victory in Santa Fe. The meeting of the two promoted sides has left El Globo feeling aggrieved as goal scorer, Rolando García Guerreño should have been serving a ban after accumulating five yellow cards from last season but the AFA failed to notify Unión. It is of course a disappointing start for Huracán but the Libertadores representatives and Unión, who were probably the most comfortably promoted side, should both be safe come November.

Simultaneously in Quilmes, Lanús got their season off to a winning start thanks to Santiago Silva’s second half goal. Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side were the better team and will be hoping to mount another title challenge this season but it was still just a single goal that separated the sides in the Estadio Centenario Dr. José Luis Meiszner. Uruguayan striker Silva was linked with a move away from Lanús over the break but it was his clever flick from Víctor Ayala’s freekick which beat Fabián Assman at his near post.

Quilmes  0 – 1  Lanús

Unión  1 – 0  Huracán
