Every tournament needs one, and in this year’s Copa Libertadores the ‘group of death’ is undoubtedly Group Two. Holders, San Lorenzo are joined by Brazilian heavyweights, Corinthians and São Paulo and so with those matches up next there was an increased pressure on Los Cuervos trip to Uruguay to face Danubio. For almost the entire match, San Lorenzo appeared to be stumbling to defeat after Matías Castro had given the hosts an early lead but two quick-fire goals, five minutes from time ensured San Lorenzo would take an early advantage in the battle for qualification.
Since winning the Copa Libertadores, San Lorenzo have looked a shadow of that side and for the majority of last night, it was still very much San Lorenzo post-Libertadores rather than the champions of South America. Castro had somehow managed to out-muscle and out-smart, three defenders to squeeze his shot past Sebastián Torrico in just the 10th minute and for much of the remainder of the game, San Lorenzo appeared devoid of ways to counter this.
However, in the 85th minute, Mauro Matos fired in an equaliser from close range and as the celebrations were still going, Mauro Cetto headed in from a corner to give El Ciclón an unlikely victory. Much tougher games lie ahead but it is worth remembering that San Lorenzo just managed to get out of their group last year before going on to lift the trophy.
