Both sides suffered demoralising defeats over the opening weekend to newly promoted sides but things went from bad to worse for Atlético Rafaela on Friday night as they were soundly beaten by Banfield.
Matías Almeyda’s side were coming off the surprise defeat to Temperley but were quickly able to forget that disappointment as Ricardo Noir curled in an opening goal after just one minute. Luciano Civelli doubled the lead after half an hour, finishing at the back post from a flicked-on corner and five minutes later it was three, after Mauricio Cuero was able to pounce on an awful defensive mix-up to roll the ball into an empty net.
The defeat to Argentinos Juniors last Sunday was poor but for La Crema to find themselves three down at half time inside the Nuevo Monumental to Banfield was a worrying step in the wrong direction.
After the break there was little improvement and the talented Nicolás Bertolo escaped down the left to slide a fourth past Esteban Conde. There was a late response thanks to Pol Fernández’s penalty but the match was already over and while Almeyda and Banfield will feel that they have turned a corner, there is a lot of work to do for Roberto Sensini and Atlético Rafaela.
