Huracán kicked off their Libertadores campaign properly last night against Mineros de Guayana in El Ducó and despite being the better side for large parts of the match it took a contentious late penalty to salvage a point from the Group Three opener.
Not since 1974 have Huracán found themselves in the Copa Libertadores group stage and so they could be excused for showing a little nerves. However, Néstor Apuzzo’s side started far better than their Venezuelan opponents and the opening goal seemed an ineviability.
The opening goal did come after 21 minutes but it was the visitors who scored. A free kick from the edge of the area was stuck firmly enough by Zamir Valoyes but perhaps Marcos Díaz will feel he could have done better given that the ball flew into the corner that he was supposed to be covering.
While there were question marks of Díaz’s goalkeeping, there was no doubting who was to blame for Huracán’s equaliser. Rafael Romo fumbled a routine pick-up and allowed Lucas Villaruel to poke El Globo level.
Daniel Montenegro made a second half appearance on his return to Huracán and as the game went back and forth it looked as though Mineros would steal it with a soft penalty ten minutes from time. However, not to be outdone, Montenegro won a penalty of his own after the slightest of tugs with two minutes remaining. Eduardo Domínguez blasted it in and El Globo were able to claim a valuable draw.
