With just three wins from their last seventeen Primera fixtures, Godoy Cruz were due a victory and although they were made to work for it, the relief when Juan Garro rifled in the winner a minute from time was obvious. Jaime Ayoví deservedly slid La Tomba in front in first half stoppage time against a fatigued Huracán side after their midweek Libertadores exploits. With fifteen minutes remaining it appeared that El Globo would snatch a point after Sebastián Moyano failed to hold Iván Borghello’s strike but a late Godoy Cruz corner was never really cleared and eventually the ball dropped to Garro and his volley was too powerful for Matías Giordano.
Earlier in Sarandí, Arsenal picked up their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw against Nueva Chicago. Luís Solignac gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half when he skipped around goalkeeper, Esteban Andrada but Ramiro Carrera equalised on the stroke of half time with a fierce long range strike. Arsenal boss Martín Palermo will be disappointed his side could not push on for victory in the second half, particularly after Chicago midfielder, Fernando De La Fuente was shown a second yellow card but without Brahian Alemán and Milton Caraglio it is little surprise that Carrera’s strike out of the blue is their only league goal so far.
