Brazilian side Corinthians have taken a commanding position in Group Two or as it has been dubbed ‘The Group of Death’ in this year’s Copa Libertadores. Last night in Bajo Flores, Elias’ second half goal was enough to defeat current champions, San Lorenzo after the hosts missed a number of guilt edged chances.
Mauro Matos was perhaps the most guilty of this and eventually Los Cuervos profligacy in front of goal was punished. 29-year-old midfielder, Elias burst from half way and although there was an element of luck when his attempted pass bounced off a defender and back into his path, he made no mistake in thumping the ball into the top corner.
Edgardo Bauza’s side made very hard work of the group stage last year and it looks as though once again, if they are to qualify it will not be straight-forward. Next up is a trip to São Paulo with perhaps second spot on the line. San Lorenzo are currenly level with São Paulo on three points and if Corinthians take maximum points from their matches with Danubio then this head to head will be crucial.
