Once again River Plate produced a decent enough performance but were again denied by an equaliser leaving Marcelo Gallardo’s side in a difficult position on group six. Juan Aurich’s synthetic pitch in Chiclayo caused all the headlines prior to kickoff but it did not prevent River from being the better side over the ninety minutes. Éder Álvarez Balanta headed River in front midway through the second half but the Peruvian side hit back in the 66th minute when Hernán Rengifo slotted the ball past Marcelo Barovero. River remain bottom of the group at the midway point with Juan Aurich in second and Tigres out in front. Gallardo cannot afford any further slip-ups if River are to avoid an embarrassing first round exit.
