The late Sunday night match is usually reserved for River Plate or Boca Juniors but after their Libertadores schedules the honour fell to Lanús and their trip to Mendoza to play Godoy Cruz. Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side have not looked particularly potent so far this season so expectation was not high but 22-year-old striker Lucas Melano ensured that the match proved every bit as engaging. His impressive four-goal haul provided Lanús with the biggest win of the season so far over.
Godoy Cruz actually took the lead in the match when Leandro Fernández fired in a spectacular long range effort for his fourth of the season but Los Mendocinos joy ended there.
Melano slid in an equaliser five minutes before half time and in stoppage time Jorge Ortíz thumped Lanús into the lead.
After a more or less even first half, the second belonged to Melano. After just four minutes, the striker out-maneuveredtwo defenders before clipping the ball over Sebastián Moyano for a wonderful individual goal and shortly after he completed his hat-trick. Rushing behind the sluggish Godoy Cruz defence, Melano once again floated the ball over Moyano to extend the lead.
Not content with just three goals, Melano dashed through on goal again and this time stroked the ball into the net. The 5-1 scoreline is the biggest in the league so far and it appears Godoy Cruz have not yet rid themselves of the porous defending exhibited during the Trasicion. If Melano can continue in this form the loss of Santiago Silva will not be noticed.
