There was fresh cause for celebration in Boedo last night as San Lorenzo triumphed in the first clásico with Huracán for close to four years. Captain Leandro Romagnoli gave a leaders performance as it was his goal that dragged his side back into the match and his run that resulted in the foul for the penalty and the important third goal.
The margin of victory perhaps flattered the home side as their rivals remained a constant threat until the final whistle. After weathering early pressure it was they that took the lead through Patricio Toranzo’s superb strike from twenty yards. As both sides exchanged blows there were a number of narrow misses before Romagnoli brought San Lorenzo level. The captain burst through the centre before tucking away his finish inside the far post.
With half time approaching and the game still balanced, Los Cuervos struck again. Sebastián Blanco’s corner dropped in the six-yard box and defender Matías Caruzzo poked the ball into the net.
The second half remained open but just after the hour mark, Romagnoli dashed into the Huracán penalty area once more, only this time he was halted by the challenge of Federico Vismara. Saul Laverni pointed to the spot and Mauro Matos sent Marcos Díaz the wrong way to provide breathing space.
Huracán continued to push and came close to pulling one back when Torranzo’s header came back off the post but they could not breach Sebastián Torrico’s goal again.
San Lorenzo moved up to second with the win as they continue to show signs of recovery but the celebrations were all about the bragging rights over their rivals.
Sadly, the celebrations were cut short after news broke of a fan dying after he fell from the stand.
