It was a contrasting night for Estudiantes and San Lorenzo in the Copa Libertadores as Mauricio Pellegrino’s Estudiantes claimed a vital victory over Libertad in La Plata while reigning champions San Lorenzo suffered a 90th minute defeat to São Paulo, leaving their hopes of qualification in the balance.
Guido Carrillo struck with ten minutes remaining to give Estudiantes a much needed three points in group seven and join Libertad at the top on seven points. However, with Atlético Nacional expected to leapfrog them both when they play Barcelona tonight, it is gearing up to be an incredibly tight group.
San Lorenzo were not so fortunate in Morumbi, where Michel Bastos’ 90th minute header inflicted a second defeat in three games for Edgardo Bauza’s defending champions. Their hopes of qualification are now more than a little precarious as they trail both last night’s victors, São Paulo and other Brazilian giants, Corinthians. The visit of São Paulo to the Nuevo Gasometro on April 1st is an absolute must-win.
