Lanús celebrated victory in front of their own fans for the first time this season late last night with a deserved 2-0 win over Gimnasia. Unlike their previous outing in Mendoza, it was not the goal blitz that saw Lucas Melano hit four but eventually their pressure told and second half goals from Víctor Ayala and Jorge Ortíz saw Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side pick up another three points and momentarily move up to third.
Neither side were able to find a breakthrough and so when it eventually came midway through the second half it was in slightly fortuitous circumstances. Víctor Ayala’s firmly struck, inswinging free-kick from distance eluded the touch of everyone in the crowded penalty area and instead sneaked inside Nicolás Navarro’s far post. As Pedro Troglio pushed his side forward in search of an equaliser in the dying minutes, Lanús made certain of victory. Lautaro Acosta’s clever pull-back was converted by Jorge Ortíz and at the third time of asking Lanús won in La Forteleza.
Earlier in Rosario, Newell’s Old Boys thought they were about to make it three straight victories when Ignacio Scocco smashed them in front two minutes from time against Quilmes. However, two minutes into stoppage time, Rodrigo Gómez curled a wonderful free-kick from twenty-five yards into the top corner to salvage a point for the away side.
