The return from injury of Diego Milito saw Racing capture something like the form that secured them the Transición in 2014 and in tandem with his strike partner, Gustavo Bou, the pair helped La Academia to a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory over San Martín. A trademark interchange between the two allowed Bou to tap Racing in front after just seven minutes and when Milito bundled the ball over the line after Marcos Acuña’s free-kick had come back off the post the match was as good as over. Racing should have added more but Diego Cocca will be glad to see Milito back and his side winning matches once again.
Unión’s impressive start to life in the Primera continued as they highlighted Vélez’s deficiencies en route to a 1-0 win in Santa Fe. Víctor Malcorra curled in a superb free-kick from the edge of the box after just ten minutes and despite having Enrique Triverio sent off just after half time, the home side held on for all three points.
Earlier in Cordoba, Belgrano climbed to fifth with a 2-0 win over Newell’s Old Boys. It did not start well for Belgrano when they lost the influential Lucas Zelarayán to injury midway through the first half but within minutes his replacement, Fernando Márquez gave them the lead when he pounced on the rebound after Claudio Pérez saw his penalty saved. The substitute then had a good goal wrongly ruled out for offside but the home side ensured that it didn’t matter. Jorge Velázquez fired the ball past Óscar Ustari just after the hour mark to claim back-to-back wins in the league.
