Argentina’s two heavyweights remain unbeaten and just two points separates them near the summit of the Primera table but Sunday’s victories could not have been different. Boca survived an early scare in La Bombonera against Estudiantes when Diego Vera’s header came back off the inside of the post but two goals in two minutes before the break from Cristian Erbes and Dani Osvaldo put Boca firmly in control. Estudiantes’ ill-discipline saw them finish the match with nine after Matías Aguirregaray and Carlos Auzqui were sent off in the second half allowing Franco Cristaldo to add a third.

River travelled to La Plata to face a struggling Gimnasia side with just a single win to their name but did not enjoy such a straight-forward evening. Handling errors by Nicolás Navarro allowed Fernando Cavanaghi and Augusto Solari to put River into a two-goal lead at half time but El Lobo came back strongly after the break. Maxi Coronel headed a goal back before Ignacio Fernández’s free-kick flew past Julio Chiarini into the bottom corner for the equaliser. For River to squander another two-goal advantage would have been an enormous source of frustration but Rodrigo Mora popped up with minutes remaining to pounce on a loose ball in the six-yard box and fire the ball past Navarro. River continue to concede goals and are far from convincing but they are unbeaten and sit in fourth just three points behind leaders San Lorenzo.

Boca Juniors  3 – 0  Estudiantes

Gimnasia  2 – 3  River Plate
