Another crunch must-win match for Edgardo Bauza’s San Lorenzo and once again they came out on top. En route to winning last year’s Copa Libertadores, San Lorenzo crept through the group stages as the lowest seed and if they are to get out of Group Two this year it will be similarly tight. Last night in the Nuevo Gasómetro, Martín Cauteruccio provided the one moment of real class with a delightful second half goal to give Los Cuervos the all-important three points over rivals, São Paulo.
With Corinthians running away with the group, it has come down to a straight shootout between San Lorenzo and São Paulo and defeat last night would have all but ended the home sides hopes of retaining the trophy.
The match was delayed after São Paulo’s coach was late to arrive to the stadium but even once the action started there was little to excite the crowd.
A game low on quality was settled twenty minutes from time when Cauteruccio flicked the ball over the head of Rafael Toloi before running through on goal and hammering the ball past Rogerio Ceni in the São Paulo goal.
The result still leaves San Lorenzo with work to do and on goal difference São Paulo hold the advantage but they have given themselves a chance. Victory over Corinthians in two weeks although unlikely would give them a really good chance to progress.
