Newell’s Old Boys ended Unión’s impressive 18-match unbeaten streak, which extends back to their title winning Nacional B season, in the Coloso last night thanks to goals from Víctor Figueroa and Diego Mateo. Figueroa headed the home side in front early and they should have extended that lead when Marcelo Cardozo cleared Maxi Rodríguez’s header off the line with his arm. However they didn’t need to wait long for the second goal when on the half hour mark a corner from the left was headed in by Diego Mateo. Unión were unable to claw their way back into the game and tasted defeat for the first time back in the Primera.
Earlier in Mataderos, Banfield made it four consecutive victories and climbed to within four points of the leaders with a 2-1 win over Nueva Chicago. Ricardo Noir pounced on a wayward pass across the defence to give Banfield the lead early but Pablo Ruíz’s skidding effort just after the break brought Chicago level. With minutes remaining and as it was beginning to look like the home side would earn a point, Lucas Viatri poked a winner for Banfield. Matías Almeyda was feeling the heat just over a month ago but has now led his side on a run of four wins and they are among the chasing pack behind Boca.
