Racing must wait to book their place in the Libertadores knockout stages after Guaraní defeat (VIDEO)

There is no real need for panic just yet for Racing but Diego Cocca’s side missed their first opportunity to reach the knockout stages after defeat in Paraguay to Guaraní. Given their last group game is at home to winless Táchira, who they thrashed 5-0 in Venezuela, top spot in group eight is still most likely. Last night in Paraguay, victory for Racing would have confirmed that already, however, a spirited Guaraní side took advantage of a below-par La Academia performance.

With the game still goalless, Guaraní second half substitute Federico Santander broke clear and his shot came off the underside of the bar and was adjudged by the keen eyed linesman that it had crossed the line. Even after the replay it wasn’t too clear but Guaraní had the lead.

Racing pushed to try and salvage something but with ten minutes remaining a fierce Marcelo Palau strike seemed to deceive Sebastián Saja and flew into the back of the net.

Defeat for Racing is a slight set-back but it would be a real shock if Táchira denied them a place in the next round.
