Estudiantes’ path to the Libertadores knockout stages is still relatively straight-forward but it is less than ideal for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side. Defeat last night to Atlético Nacional in La Plata leaves La Pincha needing a win against Barcelona of Ecuador to guarantee passage or a draw but they would then also rely on the group’s other result.
The loss to Nacional was decided by the finest of margins as Yulián Mejía’s heavily deflected shot before half time provided the only goal of the game. The Colombians move top of group seven but level on points with Libertad and so when the two face each other on April 21st it will be almost a knockout tie.
Barcelona are yet to win at home and so Estudiantes will remain hopeful of securing the victory needed but it could have been easier.
