When winless Nueva Chicago arrived at La Bombonera to face league leaders Boca Juniors the margin of the home sides victory was the main point of discussion. However, a lacklustre display from Boca and a spirited defensive performance by Chicago meant it was the newly promoted side from Mataderos that became the first team to keep Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side out. Understandably it was Boca who dominated possession and had the chances but with Dani Osvaldo starved of service and his teammates lacking any fluidity, Chicago were able to hold on to a remarkable point.
Later in La Paternal, River Plate once again showed signs of a little wobble but proved to have just enough to get by their lesser opposition and join the pack of league leaders. Argentinos Juniors honoured Juan Román Riquelme before kickoff but even the presence of one of the scourges of River could not inspire Los Bichos. Fernando Cavanaghi ran clear just after the half hour mark and slotted past Luis Ojeda to give River a deserved half time lead. However, Argentinos took advantage of a weakness that River have exhibited throughout 2015 and Lautaro Rinaldi equalised with an acrobatic volley. Before much doubt could enter the minds of River they were back in front and it came from the unlikeliest of sources. Lucas Boyé had only scored once before for River but showed great composure on chesting down Camilo Mayada’s cross to slot the ball underneath Ojeda. The win moves River level with Boca, San Lorenzo and Rosario Central at the summit despite their drop in form from last year.
