With Arsenal still without a win prior to Monday afternoon’s clash with Newell’s and coming off three straight defeats the feeling was that another defeat in Sarandí and Martín Palermo might be out of a job. However, led by recent signing, Santiago Silva, Arsenal eased to their first three points of the season with a 3-0 win meaning Palermo will keep his job for at least another couple of weeks. Two diving header minutes either side of half time by Silva put the home side in control and with little response from Newell’s, Ezequiel Ruiz added a third in stoppage time. A vital win for Arsenal, who must now try and push on if Palermo is to really feel safe.

Tigre extended their impressive home record and moved up to ninth with victory over Estudiantes in Victoria. An early dipping volley of a golazo by Lucas Wilchez gave Gustavo Alfaro’s side the lead and Leandro González Pirez made sure of the result in impressive fashion. The former River teen strode out of defence, played the ball out wide and continued his run into the box to stroke the ball past Hilario Navarro.

Another side enjoying an excellent run of form is Belgrano and last night in Córdoba they made it four straight wins with a 2-1 victory over Quilmes. The pace in Belgrano’s side is enough to cause most sides in the Primera problems and it took just twelve minutes for that to be the case against struggling Quilmes. Jorge Velázquez burst through the backline and fired the ball past Fabián Assmann for the lead. Poor defending allowed Sebastián Romero to hammer Los Cerveceros level but with less than five minutes of the match remaining big Mauro Obolo dived at a Renzo Saravia cross and diverted the ball inside the far post. Cue the irritating row-the-boat celebration as Belgrano continue to climb up the table.

Arsenal  3 – 0  Newell’s Old Boys

Tigre  2 – 0  Estudiantes

Belgrano  2 – 1  Quilmes
