A mixed night for Argentine clubs in the Copa Libertadores saw Huracán become the first side to be eliminated after suffering a 3-0 defeat in Venezuela to Mineros de Guayana. El Globo needed a win to progress from group three which against winless Mineros was far from out of the question but a poor performance was punished and goals from Zamir Valoyes and Rafael Acosta saw their Libertadores dreams crushed. In truth, Huracán have not been good enough and the home draws against Mineros and Universitario have proved costly. The added strain of the matches has seen them plummet in the league and now Néstor Apuzzo’s side must quickly get over this disappointment and concentrate on domestic matters.
Estudiantes fared much better and in Guayaquil they picked up the result needed to advance to the last 16. With Atlético Nacional winning comfortably in the group’s other match, a point would have sufficed for Gabriel Milito, making his first team coach debut, and his side but late goals from Luciano Acosta and Guido Carrillo made certain. After the home side had been reduced to ten men, Estudiantes made their advantage count and Acosta’s deflected opener was added to by Guido Carrillo’s close range finish. A perfect start for Milito sees Estudiantes through in second place behind Nacional and with a good points tally they should be seeded well.
