San Lorenzo had left themselves with a lot to do from the final round of their group after an indifferent Libertadores campaign and on Wednesday night in Bajo Flores the faint hopes were extinguished. Edgardo Bauza’s reigning champions already needed a favour in Brazil, in the form of group winners Corinthians defeating city rivals São Paulo to progress, but they also needed to beat Danubio and ultimately, neither happened.
São Paulo’s victory over Corinthians essentially rendered San Lorenzo’s match with Danubio meaningless but Los Cuervos were not to know and so the nature of their second defeat in the Nuevo Gasómetro was disappointing. Danubio had lost all five matches prior to last night and were the whipping boys in what was dubbed the ‘group of death’ but with two minutes remaining and San Lorenzo knowing that the result in Brazil had not been favourable, the Uruguayans snatched a win. Agustín Viana’s header compounded San Lorenzo’s misery as this result in addition to São Paulo’s 2-0 win over Corinthians left the champions in third.
Such failure, in spite of the undoubtedly difficult group, is a massive disappointment for San Lorenzo and Edgardo Bauza’s position will now come under further scrutiny. Since lifting the Libertadores Bauza has come under fire for his supposed negative tactics and this will not help his position.
