Luciano Vietto is reportedly close to agreeing a move that will see the 21-year-old striker reunite with the manager that gave him his Racing debut, Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid. Argentine sports network, TyC suggest that representatives from Madrid were in Buenos Aires and met with Vietto’s agent to discuss the move that would see the youngster move this summer.

TyC suggest that Atlético were present for last night’s superclásico last night to run an eye over River pair, Emanuel Mammana and Matías Kranevitter but also took the opportunity to discuss the move for Vietto. Although no details of the transfer are given, TyC understand that the deal has been made which will see Vietto move to the Vicente Calderón for the forthcoming 2015/16 season and official confirmation will be made shortly.

Simeone was in charge of Racing during the 2011 Apertura when he gave the then 17-year-old Vietto his debut and although Cholo has spoken glowingly of the striker even he must be a little surprised at what has been a breakthrough season in La Liga. Vietto was always regarded as a huge talent in Argentina but had stagnated in a poor Racing side after Simeone’s departure and so the move to Villarreal came at an ideal time to boost his fledgling career.

At Villarreal, Vietto has progressed faster than imagined and 20 goals and 9 assists in a debut season in Spain is a remarkable return for a young player in a new league. His performances have not gone unnoticed and several top European sides have been linked with a move as well as a call-up for the Argentina national side.

Simeone knows Vietto well and a player with a workrate like that of the youngster would be well suited to Cholo’s Atleti side. If these reports are true we should hear more about this in the coming days.
