An off-colour Racing produced a rather lifeless performance last night in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores last 16 match but were able to avoid defeat and return to Avellaneda with their tie against Montevideo Wanderers all square and crucially with an away goal.
After a limp first half it was the home side that took a deserved lead ten minutes into the second half when Matías Santos rifled in a low shot from the edge of the box. With time running out and Racing limping to defeat, Diego Cocca’s side snatched a life-line. Gustavo Bou’s deep cross found Brian Fernández and the youngster headed the ball past Leonardo Burián.
The two sides meet again next Thursday in Avelleneda but with that goal, Racing will now be firm favourites to advance to the quarter finals.
