San Lorenzo missed out on the chance to go level with Boca Juniors at the top, at least for 24 hours, after a 1-1 draw with Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario. Ezequiel Ponce fired La Lepra in front after just ten minutes with a wonderfully struck left foot shot, the 18-year-old’s first of the season and his first since completing his move to Roma before being loaned back to Newell’s but the lead lasted just two minutes. Martín Cauteruccio poked San Lorenzo level after some neat passing and had the 28-year-old striker been wearing his shooting boots perhaps Los Cuervos would have enjoyed a comfortable victory. The former Colón man missed several good chances after the break but was unable to add to his first half strike allowing Newell’s to earn a point.
In Liniers, Vélez Sarsfield succumbed to a third consecutive 1-0 defeat in what was a bad tempered and ill-disciplined match with Argentinos Juniors. Mariano Pavone was again guilty of squandering Vélez’s best chances and although Los Bichos had already been reduced to ten men after Franco Flores was sent off they took the lead five minutes from full time when Cristian Alvarez converted from the penalty spot. Vélez also had Fabián Cubero and Emiliano Amor sent off in the closing stages as their frustrations obviously boiled over.
