Relegated Premier League side, Queens Park Rangers have banned and fined on-loan striker Mauro Zárate two weeks wages following his reaction to being left of the matchday squad against Liverpool last week. It is the latest in a line of personal problems that have plagued Zárate’s career and for all his obvious talent it is difficult to see where the 28-year-old goes from here.
It is safe to describe Zárate’s spell with QPR as disastrous and after making just four appearances for the West London side, the former Vélez striker has now played his last. After being left out of the matchday squad for the Liverpool match, Zárate stormed out and travelled back to London alone.
This reaction and his minimal involvement in QPR’s relegation fight is perhaps why Zárate has been labelled as one of the “bad eggs” that captain Joey Barton referred to in the build-up to their decisive defeat to Manchester City.
When you consider that QPR actually tried to return Zárate to West Ham just weeks after signing him in January because of how poor his fitness was it really has been a calamity since the beginning. The Argentine striker had struggled with the Hammers during the first half of the season and had obviously fallen out with Sam Allardyce and although the managerial position at West Ham is uncertain, Zárate’s future appears bleak.
After issues earlier in his career with Lazio and Inter Milan, Zárate has garnered something of a reputation of being troublesome. The diminuitive striker is obviously talented but many clubs in Europe may now be hesitant about taking a gamble on a player who has failed to really settle anywhere.
During his most recent spell in Argentine football, back with boyhood side, Vélez Sarsfield, Zárate proved himself and emerged as the Primera’s leading scorer in the Torneo Final 2014 during an incident free time back where his career began.
Argentine football is perhaps beneficial to Zárate given that he is the big star and is a guaranteed starter with the freedom to do as he pleases. Vélez could really do with him back as they are struggling this season but if he was available then there would be no shortage of suitors in the Primera.
