Estudiantes’ Copa Libertadores hopes came to an end last night with a whimper in Bogotá. Leading from the first leg after last Tuesday’s 2-1 win in La Plata, Gabriel Milito’s side knew that they would need to be on top of their game to fend off Santa Fe in front of their own supporters. However, barring a desperate last five minutes of action as El Pincha tried to force penalties it was a disappointingly lacklustre performance.

Even after Emanuel Herrera headed Santa Fe in front shortly before half time there was little reaction from Estudiantes and so it came as little surprise when Miller Bolaños smashed in a second ten minutes from time.

A late rally when El Pincha appeared to realise they were going out saw Leonardo Jara hit the crossbar with a volley and Guido Carrillo head just wide but it was far too little.

Santa Fe advance to the quarter finals to face either Atlético Mineiro or Internacional but Estudiantes will feel that they let this one get away. Another of Argentina’s representatives also falls and if Racing progress there will be just two left.

Independiente de Santa Fe  2 – 0  Estudiantes (AGG 3-2)
