Chelsea’s Griezmann bid could see Lamela head to Madrid and Spurs move for Lavezzi

You know transfer season is nearly upon us when the news of complicated chains of transfers surface and the latest being peddled in the UK press would see two of Gerardo Martino’s Argentina squad on the move over the coming months. Chelsea’s interest in Atlético Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann could prompt Diego Simone to move for Tottenham’s Erik Lamela and in turn Spurs would swoop for Paris St Germain forward, Ezequiel Lavezzi.

All three players involved are all candidates for summer transfers but the likelihood of all of these happening is very slim. However, let’s speculate on how this could occur….

French striker, Antoine Griezmann has proved to be a huge success in his first full season at the Vicente Calderón, hitting 22 goals for an Atlético Madrid side only pipped by Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga. Needless to say Diego Simeone’s side are loathed to lose the 24-year-old but with that success brings interest from some of Europe’s bigger spenders. Chelsea and Bayern Munich have both been credited with an interest in Griezmann and with a £43.5million buy-out clause on his current deal, both might test the players resolve.

Madrid are trying to tie Griezmann down to a new deal that will either see this clause removed or the amount increased but that has not stopped Los Colchoneros making contingency plans.

Heading that list is Tottenham’s Erik Lamela, who has struggled since his move to London, but who Simeone knows well from his time as River Plate manager. Lamela was in the youth sides at the Monumental when Simeone was in charge of River and in fact when El Cholo first moved to Europe to manage Catania he attempted to bring Lamela to Italy, six months before the youngster moved to Roma for €12 million.

After a disappointing spell at White Hart Lane with just two Premier League goals, Tottenham may entertain the thought of selling Lamela. However, having paid around £30 million it is doubtful that Spurs would be able to recoup this and although Daniel Levy is notoriously a difficult man to deal with, it could make any agreement difficult.

Meanwhile, Spurs are attempting to address their forward line that has been increasingly dependant on Harry Kane this season. Reports suggest that they have already contacted Paris St Germain over Argentine Ezequiel Lavezzi. Although Laurent Blanc’s side have enjoyed a hugely successful season, Lavezzi is thought to now be surplus to requirements

French journalist Severac Dominique suggests that Lavezzi would be available for between €10m to €15m. This would be quite a drop from the €30 million that the French champions paid for Lavezzi when he arrived from Napoli in 2012 but the 30-year-old’s valuation is now only likely to decrease. Still a member of the Argentina squad, Lavezzi remains a very talented footballer who could add a great deal to a side like Tottenham. Whether or not Spurs will want to part with that amount of money for a player coming to the end of his career remains to be seen.
