Carlos Tevez seems to have divided opinion for much of this career but one thing that cannot be denied is El jugador del pueblo is a winner. Last night’s dramatic Coppa Italia victory for Juventus over Lazio meant that for the 21st time in his career, Carlos Tevez was a champion. Medals from Argentina, Brazil, England and Italy illustrate just how important the striker has been to the clubs that he has played for and could still be over the next few years.
The impressive number of 21 is only a little shy of Esteban Cambiasso or Lionel Messi and with time left in his career and the possibility of adding a Copa América title with Argentina this summer, the number could yet increase.
So, let’s take a look….
#1 2003 Under-20 South American Championship
Alongside Javier Mascherano and Pablo Zabaleta, the 18-year-old Carlos Tevez helped Argentina to the 2003 South American championship under coach, Hugo Tocalli. Until the recent victory in 2015 this would be the last time that Argentina won the title.
#2 2003 Copa Libertadores
A golden era for Boca Juniors but few players were loved quite as much as young Carlos Tevez at La Bombonera. A prodigious talent, Tevez scored the opening goal in the second leg of the Final away to Santos as Boca swept aside the Brazilian side 5-1 on aggregate to lift South America’s biggest prize.
#3 2003 Apertura
Boca’s dominance continued domestically as Carlos Bianchi’s side lifted the 2003 Apertura. Tevez ended the tournament as Boca’s leading scorer with 8 goals.
#4 2003 Intercontinental Cup
Still one of Boca’s greatest accomplishments, Bianchi’s boys defeated the great AC Milan of Cafu, Maldini, Pirlo, Kaka and Shevchenko to capture the Intercontinental cup when the two sides met in Japan.
#5 2004 Pre-Olympic South American Championship
Not Tevez’s greatest achievement but another title all the same. Argentina’s under-23s won the title in Chile to qualify for the Olympic games later that year in Athens.
#6 2004 Olympic Gold
Argentina’s first Olympic gold came in 2004 and Carlos Tevez proved instrumental as he was the tournament’s leading scorer. A hat-trick in the quarter final against Costa Rica, the opening goal in the semi final against Italy and the only goal in the final against Paraguay showed just why Tevez had already gained a reputation as one of the best young players in world football.
#7 2004 Copa Sudamericana
A final trophy with Boca before Tevez’s massive $20 million move to Corinthians. Carlos scored in the second leg of the final against Bolívar on December 17th 2004 and less than a month later completed the biggest transfer in South American football.
#8 2005 Campeonato Brasileiro
A first season in a Brazil and a title. Tevez scored 20 goals in 29 league appearances and was awared the Bola de Oura as the best player in the championship becoming the first non-Brazilian player to win the award since 1976.
#9 2007-08 Premier League
After the messy West Ham transfer and controversially firing the Hammers to Premier League safety, Tevez completed a two-year loan deal to Manchester United. Tevez repaid United with 14 goals as they regained the Premier League title.
#10 2007-08 Champions League
United followed the Premier League title with the Champions League after defeating Chelsea on penalties in Moscow. Tevez successfully scored the first penalty in the shootout and became one of a select group to lift both the Libertadores and the Champions League.
#11 2008 Community Shield
Another penalty shootout and another trophy for Manchester United. Tevez again took responsibility with the first and put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side on course for victory.
#12 2008 Club World Cup
A second intercontinental title for Tevez as Manchester United defeated Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito in Yokohama. Wayne Rooney bagged the only goal of the game to make it title number 12 for Tevez.
#13 2008-09 League Cup
A new season but Manchester United continued to have luck with penalty shootouts. Tottenham frustrated them in the Carling Cup Final and after a goalless draw Tevez was successful once again from the spot to help United to the title.
#14 2008-09 Premier League
A difficult season for Tevez personally after a fall-out with Alex Ferguson over a permanent deal not materialising at Old Trafford saw him not able to produce his best but his popularity with the supporter never waned. Tevez may have only scored five league goals but played a part in United lifting the Premier League trophy for a third consecutive time.
#15 2010-11 FA Cup
Following his controversial move across Manchester to City for what at the time was a British transfer record, Tevez hit 23 goals but could only help the Citizens to a fifth placed finish. However, Tevez did complete his collection of English trophies when City defeated Stoke for the FA Cup.
#16 2011-12 Premier League
City continued to strengthen and the following season finally got their hands on the Premier League title. Sergio Agüero’s injury time winner on the final day against QPR will forever be remembered but Tevez picked up a third Premier League winners medal. At this point, Tevez was looking for a way out of England and his status in Roberto Mancini’s squad began to decine.
#17 2012 Community shield
In spite of his problems in the previous campaign Tevez was in the starting eleven when City took on Chelsea for the Community shield and scored the second as Mancini’s side won 3-2. It proved to be the last piece of English silverware that City would win.
#18 2013 Supercoppa Italiana
In the summer of 2013 Tevez completed a transfer to Italian champions, Juventus and on his competitive debut scored the fourth in a 4-0 win over Lazio to win the Supercoppa.
#19 2013-14 Serie A
Juventus successfully defended their title for a third straight scudetto and Tevez proved an immediate success as he has throughout his career. 19 goals and 7 assists ensured for the fourth time in his career, his debut season brought with it the league title.
#20 2014-15 Serie A
Another season at Juve and another Serie A title. 20 league goals made Tevez the leading scorer in Serie A during a historic potential treble winning season for the bianconeri.
#21 Coppa Italia
Part two of that treble was completed last night with the extra time victory over Lazio. Tevez was not on the score sheet but assisted Juve in ending a 20-year-wait since their last Coppa Italia victory.
The Champions League final in a couple of weeks followed by the Copa América give Tevez two further opportunities to add to this collection.
