Argentinos Juniors recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since their return to the Primera and extended Newell’s Old Boy’s poor run of form with a 2-1 win in La Paternal. Luciano Cabral poked Los Bichos in front just before the half hour mark and it got worse for Newell’s five minutes later when young striker Ezequiel Ponce was sent off after picking up a second yellow card. Lautaro Rinaldi drilled in a second late on and although Maxi Rodríguez pulled one back, El Tolo Gallego’s side could not prevent the loss.
In Mendoza, Godoy Cruz inflicted a first defeat in eight games for a Belgrano side with the top of the table in their sights. A rather ill-disciplined match was heading for a goalless draw but with minutes left on the clock, Belgrano defender Renzo Saravia smashed the ball into his own net from the edge of the box whilst attempting to dispossess Jaime Ayoví. There may not be a better own goal all season but the defeat means that Belgrano miss the chance to take the outright lead of the Primera.
