Argentina striker, Gonzalo Higuaín could be set for a summer departure from Napoli and according to Italian football journalist, Tancredi Palmeri both Manchester United and Arsenal have contacted the 27-year-old over a possible switch.

Despite a season full of speculation and something of a fractious relationship with teammates and supporters, Higuaín netted 18 Serie A goals, 29 in all competitions and will travel to Chile with the Argentina squad for the Copa América with his reputation as one of the best centre-forwards on the market intact.

Napoli manager, Rafa Benítez’s exit coupled with the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League could see Higuaín leave Italy and it would appear that the Azzurri would be willing to part with their star striker if the price of £42 million is met.

Louis van Gaal’s United will be looking to strengthen once again following their successful Champions League qualification and after opting not to make Falcao’s transfer permanent they will be looking to add a world class striker to their ranks. Arsenal, meanwhile, will be hoping that they can finally make a sustained title bid and the addition of what would be considered a 30-goal-a-season striker might just make that a more real possibility.

Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri tweeted earlier:

On Sunday afternoon Higuaín scored twice for Napoli in their final day clash with Lazio where a Champions League spot was up for grabs. However, with Napoli needing a win and the scores locked at 2-2 Higuaín missed from the penalty spot and it was Lazio who went on to win the game and qualify.

The number nine will now meet up with the Argentina squad ahead of the Copa América but it would not be a surprise to see the former River Plate star at the centre of a big-money transfer this summer.
