Olimpo have only won once all season and so River Plate’s visit was supposed to yield one result which would see River close in on San Lorenzo at the top. However the strugglers from Bahía Blanca had other ideas and after a very evenly contested hour, they took a deserved lead through Jacobo Mansilla. Marcelo Gallardo’s title chasers appeared to be heading for a shock defeat but with minutes remaining Gonzalo ‘Pity’ Martínez smashed in a powerful, left-footed volley from 30 yards to give River a share of the points. The result leaves River just three points off the pace at the summit but they have a game in hand, setting up what will be an exciting second half of the season.

In Mendoza, Godoy Cruz were held to a goalless draw but an entirely unadventurous Arsenal side who failed to register a shot on goal in the ninety minutes. Even playing against ten men for much of the second half, Caruso Lombardi’s side never really looked like getting anything from the game and so both sides got what was deserved.

Godoy Cruz  0 – 0  Arsenal de Sarandí

Olimpo  1 – 1  River Plate
