With Cambiasso’s Leicester deal up, West Ham and Independiente both hope to snap up Cuchu

When one of Argentina’s most decorated footballers, Esteban Cambiasso signed for newly promoted Leicester City at the start of last season it was one of the more surprising transfers of the window. One year on and Cambiasso’s deal at the King Power Stadium is coming to an end and so a number of sides jostle for position with the 34-year-old becoming available once more. West Ham appear to be strongly linked with offering an alternative Premier League club but Cambiasso’s former club, Independiente hope that they can persuade the veteran into a return to Argentina.

While Cambiasso’s arrival in Leicester may have been a surprise it was certainly a success as Cuchu helped the Foxes remain in the Premier League and was voted the club’s Player of the Year. Any question marks over whether he could still perform at the top level were ended and his influence in Leicester’s midfield was immeasurable.

Understandably Leicester are keen to retain the services of Cambiasso but after such a season they now face competition. British press are reporting that West Ham have made contact with the player’s agent and will be able to offer higher wages than those on offer with Leicester.

However, Cambiasso was non-committal when quizzed on his future, telling The Sun: “I still have not thought about it. I know that they asked this question but I cannot answer.

“I faced a new challenge, to play in the three most competitive leagues was something I wanted. Our objectives were all met. Get to the Premier League, play and be loved in a new team.”

Those objectives were certainly all met which is perhaps why there is also a suggestion that Cambiasso will leave his glittering career in Europe behind and return to Argentina. Despite being a graduate of Argentinos Juniors’ academy, Independiente were Cambiasso’s first professional club and El Rojo are once more hoping to tempt the 34-year-old into a return. Given that the player has proven that he is still more than able to play in one of Europe’s top leagues and will not be able to earn anywhere near the amount on offer, a move at this point to Buenos Aires would appear highly unlikely.
