A reaction from the Paraguay match was needed and although it was nervy Gerardo Martino’s side produced an excellent performance to deservedly defeat Uruguay. A tight first half was dominated by Argentina with Pastore and Messi threatening while Albiceleste enjoyed over 70% possession but Fernando Muslera kept the score goalless. Gerardo Martino was sent from the dugout during a prickly first half where Uruguay attempted to exert some physical dominance but after the break, it was Argentina that remained in command and ten minutes later, the breakthrough came. Pastore expertly spun away from his marker and flicked the ball wide to Pablo Zabaleta and his cross was met by the head of Manchester City teammate, Sergio Agüero at the near post. Agüero had been quiet up until that point but showed just what a danger he can be when he is sharp and in-form. Martino’s side had chances to wrap up the victory but it was Uruguay who came closest in the remaining minutes with Diego Rolan missing the best of them. Argentina held on and claimed a hugely valuable and morale boosting victory while leaves them in pole position to claim top spot in Group B.
