Qualification was already secured before a ball was kicked but topping group B was still of importance to Gerardo Martino’s Argentina and against a Jamaica side intent on packing men behind the ball that result looked rarely in doubt on Saturday evening in Viña del Mar. La Albiceleste were in control of the game from the first minute but never really moved out of second gear and failed to kill off their Caribbean opposition after Gonzalo Higuaín had given them an early lead. The unspectacular 1-0 win was enough to finish top of the group and likely face the third placed side from group C in the quarter final but many supporters would have liked to see Argentina make a bit more of a statement and answer some critics who question the sides potency in attack with a more comfortable win.
