With eleven different clubs over a ten year career so far, Dani Osvaldo finally feels at home but the controversial striker faces an uncertain future and could well rack up club number twelve by the end of the transfer window. The player wishes to remain with Boca, where he has been on loan, but Southampton will be reluctant to grant this or have him back at St Mary’s and given his track-record the Premier League club may not be inundated with offers.
Osvaldo arrived at Boca in February claiming that it was a “dream move” and immediately had a rapport with the supporters by mocking rivals River over the recent 5-0 defeat in a preseason friendly. Things on the pitch started well too, with a goal on his debut in the Copa Libertadores against Montevideo Wanderers but trouble is never far away it seems for the 29-year-old.
The first scandal was his apparent involvement in sneaking women into the team hotel but was followed by his tweet to CONMEBOL after they had kicked Boca out of the Copa Libertadores and more recently a rather messy and public split from his girlfriend and mother of one of his children.
Whether this had an effect on Osvaldo on the pitch isn’t clear but certainly after his superb start, the goals dried up a little in the past couple of months. That aside, El Loco still managed a respectable 7 goals from 15 appearances during the loan spell.
With Boca now signing Osvaldo’s friend, Carlos Tevez the Southampton loanee is even more desperate to stay and strike up what would be an extraordinary attacking pair for the Argentine Primera. However, such a deal will be very difficult to finance and as such Boca president, Daniel Angelici is dependent on the Saints sanctioning another six-month loan.
Needless to say the Premier League club are less inclined to do that as they would prefer to get their club record signing off the books permanently. Lazio and Fiorentina have reportedly made approaches to sign Osvaldo but it remains to be seen if any deal can be agreed.
Southampton will need to cut their losses and accept that the £15 million that they shelled out for Osvaldo has been an utter waste of money, while the player will most likely need to start again elsewhere.
