Javier Mascherano has experienced more heartache than anyone else in Argentina colours after last weekend’s Copa América final defeat became the latest chapter in his unfortunate international career. As a twenty-year-old Mascherano was part of the 2004 side that lost to Brazil in the final thanks to Adriano’s last second goal taking it to penalties and since then he has been on the losing side in two further Copa América finals, one World Cup final and one Confederations Cup final. It is little wonder he pondered: “Maybe it is me…this is torture.”
In light of this most recent pain, Mascherano’s agent WalterTamer told a radio show: “Maschedoes notfeelable to changethingsthat shouldbemodified.Maybe he needsalittlerest.” These quotes quickly spread and the rumours that Mascherano would retire from international duty were soon being reported throughout the media.
However, the Barcelona defender moved swiftly via his Twitter account yesterday to quash any such rumours.
“I just want to clarify that you are speculating about my continuity in La Selección is a lie. It’s all very recent and very painful to make decisions. It would be very selfish of me to think about my personal situation after the blow of losing another final.
“As it has always been in my career, when I have something to say, if I have something to say, I will do it and to who needs to know. Anyone else who speaks in my name should not be taken into account.
“I would have liked not to have to come out and deny anything, but I feel obliged to do so, so that there is no confusion.
Regards, Javier Mascherano”
Mascherano still has plenty to offer the national side and will be useful in helping to bring through some of the younger players that Argentina must start bringing through before the World Cup in 2018.
