Dani Osvaldo was back on the training pitch this morning with Boca Juniors but any deal to see the controversial striker remain at La Bombonera looks unlikely. Rather the 29-year-old was visiting his friend, Carlos Tevez, who had joined up with the Boca squad for the first time since his return and the morning after his impressive presentation to the supporters. Following Osvaldo’s contract with Southampton being terminated, Boca had hoped that the free agent would choose to remain in Buenos Aires but news today suggests that Mexican side, Cruz Azul will in fact be his next stop.
Starting afresh at a new club is nothing new to Dani Osvaldo but having arrived at Boca on-loan at the start of the year and declaring it was a ‘dream move’ it was thought that if the opportunity arose to make that move permanent the ill-disciplined centre-forward would jump at the chance. Boca would never have been able to afford a deal with Southampton so when the Premier League side decided to cut their losses and terminate his contract with two years remaining, the odds on a Boca return seemed to fall significantly.
Boca president Daniel Angelici has admitted that the club have made an offer and discussions are on-going but with the deadline approaching in Argentina a move elsewhere is more probable. Until that is confirmed Boca have allowed Osvaldo to train with the side but even that would seem temporary as it is understood Osvaldo will now travel to Mexico City for a medical with Liga MX side, Cruz Azul.
The Mexican side have just sold one Argentine striker in Mauro Formica to Newell’s Old Boys and with Roque Santa Cruz looking at an extended spell on the sidelines, Osvaldo will provide them with firepower ahead of the new Mexican season. Former River Plate midfielder, Ariel Rojas has just moved to La Máquina himself and it is now expected that Osvaldo will travel for a medical on Thursday.
Newspapers in Argentina suggest that although Osvaldo remains keen to stay with Boca, his personal problems and constant tabloid attention, have led to his advisors pushing for a move away from Buenos Aires. One way or another his future should be determined this week.
Note – Since reporting this it is now being said that Dani Osvaldo has been unable to agree terms with Cruz Azul and any deal is off.
