The AFA executive committee met yesterday to discuss the structure of the Argentine Primera once this 30-team season ends at the end of the year. The agreement in place states that the structure will go back to one short-championship before a return to the year-long season but one which will fall in line with the European season.

Following meeting the agreement in principle will see a Primera league split into two groups of fifteen, each team playing each once with an added match where they will face their ‘clásico’ rivals (Boca v River, Independiente v Racing etc). This will take place between February 7th and May 22nd and the following weekend will be the title decider when the winners of the two groups will meet in a one-off final played at a neutral venue.

The relegation and promotion picture is still unclear but the idea is that gradually the number of teams in the Primera will be reduced. Once this short tournament is complete, the Primera will return to one long season but rather than run alongside the calendar year, as it has this year, it will run in line with the European season.

As ever with AFA this is open to change and there are still a great deal of details that need to be clarified, primarily the relegations and promotions but at present this will be Argentine football for the next couple of years.
