Both La Plata clubs sneaked through to join Rosario Central in the last 16 of this year’s Copa Argentina after penalty wins over Primera clubs. Estudiantes trailed San Martín for much of their match after Daniel González had given Los Verdinegros the lead with a well struck volley but with ten minutes remaining full-back, Álvaro Pereira forced an equaliser from close range. The two sides still could not be separated until Dario Franco shot wide and gave El Pincha the victory and sets up a tie against either Quilmes or Independiente Rivadavia.

In Formosa, Gimnasia joined their rivals in the next round after a goalless draw with Unión also needed penalties. El Lobo goalkeeper Nicolás Navarro proved to be the match winner with three saves as Pedro Troglio’s side set up a last 16 tie against either Acussuso or Vélez Sarsfield.

Estudiantes  1 – 1  San Martín (6-5 on penalties)

Gimnasia  0 – 0  Unión  (6-5 on penalties)
