Man Utd, Real Madrid and Roma all contact free-agent Romero

Sergio Romero has struggled for attention at club level over the past couple of years but after being released by Sampdoria, the Argentina number one is now one of the most sought after free agents. It is understood that Manchester United and Roma have already discussed offers with Romero’s agent and they are now joined by Real Madrid, who themselves are in the market for a goalkeeper after allowing Iker Casillas to join Porto.

Despite his lack of playing time at both Monaco and Sampdoria since 2013 Sergio Romero has remained as Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper under both Alejandro Sabella and Gerardo Martino. His difficulties in Europe have often led to his place in the national side being questioned but the 28-year-old has never really let them down and was one of the heroes of the World Cup in Brazil after his penalty saves in the semi-final shootout against Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands. These performances earned him a place on the shortlist for the tournament golden gloves but did not see his game time increase much last season.

For the most capped goalkeeper in the history of the Argentina national side, Romero still receives a great deal of criticism, something which a high-profile switch to one of Europe’s top clubs would help with.

Louis van Gaal knows Romero very well after bringing him to Europe from Racing Club whilst in charge of AZ Alkmaar in 2007 but the reports suggest that Manchester United have met with the player’s agent Mino Raiola and offered a hefty £1.4 million-per-year wage. This is said to be significantly more than Roma have offered and given that United have confirmed Victor Valdes is leaving and doubts remain of David De Gea, there could be some substance to this.

The only doubt is that Real Madrid are also now reported to have made contact with Raiola and may provide competition. Much depends on De Gea with Madrid obviously keen on United’s young spaniard; if Real are successful in their pursuit then Romero will be a no-go, clearing the way for United but if not then it could be an interesting battle.

United are favourites due to Romero’s link with van Gaal and with confirmation that Valdes’ departure they will be in need of an able back-up at the very least.
