After the months of speculation and the weeks of anticipation Carlos Tevez finally walked out onto the pitch at La Bombonera in front of his adoring public back in Boca colours. The 31-year-old icon may not have made a scoring return to action but showed flashes of his talent as Boca were made to work hard for a 2-1 win over Quilmes. Sebastián Palacios gave them a first half lead before Jonathan Calleri extended the lead with a contender for goal of the season. The 21-year-old audaciously lobbed Quilmes goalkeeper Walter Benítez with a rabona and although Alexis Canelo pulled a goal back, Tevez made a winning start to life back at Boca.

For the first time since December 2004, Boca supporters, including Diego Maradona were able to cheer Carlos Tevez out onto the pitch wearing the famous number ten shirt and as his every touch was loudly cheered, Boca eventually edged out spirited visitors, Quilmes.

It was Quilmes who enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges but just before the half hour mark it was Boca that led. Pablo Pérez picked out Sebastián Palacios and the 23-year-old stayed onside to eventually tap Boca in front after Benítez saved his tame initial effort.

After the break Boca pushed for a second and Tevez came close to the goal that the supporters craved after he was played in down the right channel by striker partner, Jonathan Calleri only for his powerful finish to come back off the crossbar. Shortly after, Calleri again attempted to find Tevez when through on goal but his squared pass was cut out and with the ball on his weaker left foot, the young striker produced an outrageous rabona to lob Benítez and double the lead.

Quilmes pulled one back when Alexis Canelo headed in unmarked at the back post to set up a slightly nervier finish than expected but Tevez and Boca held on for their expected victory. The win puts Boca back on top of the table and although the attack looked a little incohesive Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side are the team to beat in the title race.
