Round seventeen drew to a close on Monday night and there were victories for La Plata clubs, Gimnasia and Estudiantes as well as Unión. In El Bosque, Gimnasia gave Gabriel Heinze his first taste of defeat as Godoy Cruz boss after the home side were able to take advantage of Luis Jerez Silva’s red card and score two late goals to take all three points. With Rodrigo Rey out of goal, Ignacio Fernández lobbed in the opener from outside the box and with minutes remaining Rodrigo Contreras rounded Rey to tap in the second and notch a fifth consecutive win for El Lobo.
In Misiones, Estudiantes also celebrated picking up three points after coming from behind to defeat Crucero del Norte on a dreadful playing surface. Ariel Cólzera curled the bus company in front midway through the second half with a well struck free-kick but Álvaro Pereira bundled in an equaliser almost immediately after. With Gabi Milito’s side struggling in the long, rain soaked grass it looked as though Crucero would claim another point but Diego Mendoza headed a late winner to become only the second side to win in Garupá.
Finally, in La Paternal, Argentinos Juniors fell to a third straight defeat as Unión took advantage of some pretty woeful defending to record a valuable away victory. Franco Soldano scored either side of half-time to give the visitors the cushion and so Lucas Cano’s injury time goal was nothing more than a consolation.
