Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero has reportedly agreed a three-yeardeal with Manchester United which will see link-up again with Louis van Gaal, the man who brought him to Europe in 2007.
Despite not playing a great deal of first-team football, Romero has remained Argentina’s number one and after being released by Sampdoria at the end of last season, the 28-year-old has found himself in demand. Real Madrid and Roma were both interested but Italian newspaper La Gazzetta della Sport is now reporting that Manchester United have agreed a three-year deal worth €1.8 million-per-year.
At both Monaco and Sampdoria since 2013 Sergio Romero has spent the majority of his time on the bench excepy for with the national team where under both Alejandro Sabella and Gerardo Martino he has been first-choice. His difficulties in Europe have often led to his place in the national side being questioned but the 28-year-old has never really let them down and was one of the heroes of the World Cup in Brazil after his penalty saves in the semi-final shootout against Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands. These performances earned him a place on the shortlist for the tournament golden gloves but did not see his game time increase much last season.
For the most capped goalkeeper in the history of the Argentina national side, Romero still receives a great deal of criticism, something which a high-profile switch to one of Europe’s top clubs would help with.
Louis van Gaal knows Romero very well after bringing him to Europe from Racing Club whilst in charge of AZ Alkmaar in 2007. With Victor Valdes about to leave Old Trafford, Romero will arrive as deputy to David De Gea, provided he doesn’t depart for Real Madrid. It could mean more time on the bench for Romero but with United back in the Champions League there should be plenty more opportunities.
