After just one disappointing season in England it would seem that Ángel Di María’s time is up at Manchester United. Several reports are now suggesting that Paris St Germain have had a £45.9 million (€65m) bid accepted and with both clubs currently in the United States for pre-season and scheduled to meet on Thursday it is hoped that a deal could be finalised by the weekend.
French media outlet France Football appears to have been the source of this story but it has since been picked up by most of the UK press and if true would end a hugely underwhelming twelve months in Manchester for Di María.
The 27-year-old arrived to Manchester United in a British transfer record-breaking £59.7 million deal and was supposed to be the marquee signing that heralded a new era under Louis van Gaal. United needed to beat off competition from Paris St Germain to land the Argentina star but it seems interest from Paris never went away and they could now land their man for almost £15 million less than he cost a year earlier.
Di María’s transfer to Manchester came off the back of a starring role for Real Madrid as they lifted the Champions League and after a very bright start to his career in the Premier League, including a stunning goal away to Leicester, his form tailed off. As the season went on, injuries and an obvious lack of confidence saw his place in Louis van Gaal’s side go to Ashley Young.
Despite this loss of form, Di María kept his place in Gerardo Martino’s Argentina side for the Copa América and showed flashes of his old self as La Albiceleste fell at the final hurdle, just as they had in Brazil. Most United supporters it would appear would like to keep Di María, in the knowledge that on his day they have a player of the highest calibre. The player himself has previously insisted he is happy to remain in England and fight for his place but with a big money offer on the table, El Fideo might rethink this. The arrival of Memphis Depay and perhaps more to follow has only seen competition for places increase at Old Trafford.
Following an extended break after the Copa América, Di María is expected in the United States to meet up with the squad this weekend while negotiations continue. Van Gaal’s side play Barcelona on Saturday before next week’s clash with Paris St Germain, by which point Di María could have switched clubs.
