Belgrano’s excellent run of form was halted last night in Córdoba as league leaders Boca Juniors battled to a 1-0 victory despite finishing the match with nine men. Carlos Tevez was making his second appearance since returning to Boca but Ricardo Zielinski’s surprise title challengers made life difficult and with so few chances the deadlock was broken by an unlikely source. Fernando Gago, at the second time of asking, fired past Juan Carlos Olave shortly before half-time but after Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side had both Pablo Pérez and Gino Peruzzi sent off, La Celeste cranked up the pressure. Impressively Boca managed to deny the home side an equaliser and claim an invaluable three points.
Earlier, Lanús’ inconsistent season continued after Defensa y Justicia claimed a hugely surprising away victory thanks to Julio Rodríguez’s injury time winner. El Granate dominated the game but were unable to find a way through and paid the price in the dying stages. The result leaves Lanús back in tenth while Defensa y Justicia move a little further away from the foot of the table.
