Argentine football is today mourning the loss of Lanús defender Diego Barisone after the 26-year-old was killed early this morning travelling on the Rosario-Santa Fe motorway. It is understood that Barisone was driving back to Buenos Aires from Santa Fe when his car crashed into the back of a truck at around 5AM on Tuesday.
Barisone had only just played for Lanús in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Defensa y Justicia but had returned to his hometown in Santa Fe afterwards. This morning he was due back in Buenos Aires for this week’s training ahead of the weekend match against San Martín.
Hailing from Santa Fe, Barisone began his career with local club, Unión and won promotion with them to the Primera in 2011 before moving to Argentinos Juniors in 2013. After a year with Los Bichos, Barisone returned to Unión and once more helped his local side back into the top flight. A strong, no nonsense type of central defender, Guillermo Barros Schelotto brought him to Lanús at the start of this season and he had been an almost ever-present in the side since his transfer.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Diego.
