Fresh from hearing the good news that the AFA had reversed their earlier defeat to Newell’s from round 13 on the grounds that La Lepra had fielded an ineligible player, Caruso Lombardi’s Arsenal celebrated a second victory of the day. Argentinos Juniors were Monday’s visitors to Sarandí and a brace from Santiago Silva either side of half-time proved to be the catalyst for a 3-2 win against Néstor Gorosito’s fellow strugglers.

Silva gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot after 28 minutes and minutes after the restart capitalised on some woeful defending from Argentinos to double the lead. Matías Campo Toro tapped in a third shortly after Arsenal were cruising to only a third league victory of the season.

Late goals from Andrés Franzoia and Nicolás Freire made it a little nervier than it should have been but Caruso’s boys held on for a hugely valuable three points. A fourth consecutive defeat for Argentinos leaves Los Bichos now looking over their shoulders.

Earlier in Mataderos, Nueva Chicago against San Martín promised very little…it delievered even less. Chicago will never have a better chance of claiming a first win after being awarded a penalty with fifteen minutes remaining. However, Leandro Caballero opted to go with power down the middle and Leonardo Corti stayed firm to keep it out.

Nueva Chicago  0 – 0  San Martín

Arsenal de Sarandí  3 – 2  Argentinos Juniors
