With five consecutive home draws and only four wins from the last fourteen matches it easy to see where Rosario Central’s title challenge is disappearing. Saturday night’s visit of Sarmiento was a familiar tale as Eduardo Coudet’s needed a Marco Ruben goal to salvage a point but fell further behind the league leaders. Sebastián Luna gave Sarmiento the lead in first-half stoppage time and with time running out Marco Ruben smashed in an equaliser to set up a grandstand finish in the Gigante de Arroyito. Central pushed but could not find a winner and the point leaves them potentially seven points adrift at the end of the weekend.
In Santa Fe, Independiente continued their fine start to life under Mauricio Pellegrino with a fourth straight win courtesy of Diego Vera’s first goal for the club against Colón. El Rojo had perhaps shaded the first-half but it was Colón who were enjoying a spell of pressure after the break before Jesús Méndez’s cross was turned in by Diego Vera. It was a good finish by Vera in just his second game for Independiente and although Colón pressed for an equaliser there was no way past Diego Rodríguez. Julián Vitale hit the crossbar and Martín Benítez spurned a glorious opportunity as El Rojo looked to kill the game but ultimately Vera’s goal was enough. Three clean sheets and four wins and Cebolla Rodríguez yet to be incorporated into the squad, things are suddenly looking far brighter for Independiente.
